Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc. is a deciduous tree or shrub of the genus Cornus in the family Cornaceae. Its bark is gray-brown; its twigs are thin cylindrical, glabrous or sparsely adnate with short soft hairs; winter buds are terminal and axillary, ovate to lanceolate, and covered with yellow-brown short soft hairs; leaves are opposite, papery, ovate-lanceolate or ovate-elliptic, and petioles are thin cylindrical; umbels grow on the sides of branches, ovate, thick papery to leathery, peduncles are thick, flowers are small, bisexual, open before leaves, and pedicels are slender; drupes are oblong, red to purple-red, with bony kernels and narrowly elliptic; flowering period is March-April; fruiting period is September-October.
